Etymologie

Steno (= schmal), Anspielung nicht erklärt, bezieht sich vielleicht auf den zusammengedrückten Körper von Stenogobius gymnopomus; Gobius (= Grundel), bezieht sich auf die frühere Einordnung von Stenogobius gymnopomus in diese Gattung und/oder spiegelt Bleekers Einordnung dieses Taxons in eine Phalanx wider, die er Gobiini nannte.
