Etymologie
Macro- (= groß); lepis (= Schuppen), bezieht sich auf "sehr große und harte" Schuppen von Rücken und Seiten. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Ostafrika, Sokotra, Seychellen, Madagaskar, Rodrigues (Maskarenen) und Persischer Golf östlich bis zum Tuamotu-Archipel und den Marquesas-Inseln, nördlich bis Südkorea, südlich bis Neukaledonien, Aitutaki (Cookinseln) und Australinseln; auch angrenzende Flussmündungen und Süßwasserlebensräume in Afrika, Asien, Australien und Ozeanien.
