Etymologie

Melanos (= schwarz); taenia (= Band), bezieht sich auf das schwarze Seitenband von Melanotaenia nigrans, das Gill als eines der beiden diagnostischen Merkmale ansah, die Melanotaenia nigrans von Atherina, der Gattung, in der diese Art ursprünglich beschrieben wurde, unterscheiden.
