Etymologie
Porcellus ist die Verkleinerungsform von porcus (= Schwein, d. h. kleines Schwein), wahrscheinlich mit Bezug auf die stumpfe Schnauze, die über den Unterkiefer hinausragt. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Labeo porcellus ist nur aus den Krishna- und Godavari-Flusssystemen des Western Ghats bekannt. Das Vorkommen dieser Art in Sri Lanka ist auf die vermeintliche Synonymie mit Labeo lankae zurückzuführen. In Indien ist die Art hauptsächlich auf ostwärts fließende Flüsse beschränkt, aber Bhat (2004) hat es von einem westwärts fließenden Fluss in Karnataka aufgezeichnet, eine genaue Lokalität wird jedoch nicht erwähnt. Das Vorkommen dieser Art in Badoda (heute Vadodara) in Gujrat (Ranade 1953) und Zentralindien (Sarkar & Lakra 2007) ist zweifelhaft.

Status: Stand 6.10.2018:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Die Population von Labeo porcellus ist rückläufig (Menon 2004) und könnte auf eingeführte Karpfen, Verschmutzung der Flüsse und starke Überfischung zurückgeführt werden (David 1956, Kharat et al. 2003, Menon 2004).
