Etymologie
Benannt nach Malabar (d. h. Südindien), unter Bezugnahme auf Tharangambadi, der Typuslokalität.
Verbreitung
Rotes Meer; Indo-West-Pazifik: Ostafrika, Südafrika, Madagaskar und Persischer Golf, östlich bis zu den Philippinen und Neuguinea, nördlich bis Japan und den Kurilen, südlich bis zum Exmouth-Golf (Westaustralien) und New South Wales (Australien).
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 30.1.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Obwohl diese Art mit Haken und Leinen, kleinen Fallen und Kiemennetzen gefangen wird, wurde bisher kein Rückgang der Population beobachtet oder vermutet. Es sind keine anderen größeren Bedrohungen für diese Art bekannt.
