Etymologie
Von gunnell (Pholis gunnellus, Perciformes: Pholidae), in Anlehnung an die ähnliche Gestalt wie Pholis gunnellus von Gunnellichthys pleurotaenia und/oder an seine mutmaßliche enge Verwandtschaft mit Pholidichthys (Cichliformes: Pholidichthyidae), die Bleeker alle zu den Schleimfischen zählte; ichthys (= Fisch).
