Etymologie
Melanos (= schwarz); stoma (= Maul), bezieht sich wahrscheinlich auf die fleischigen schwarzen Lippen ("labrus carnosis nigris") bei den Exemplaren, auf die Pallas seine Beschreibung stützte. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Becken des Azovschen, Schwarzen und Kaspisches Meeres. Invasiv im baltischen Becken, das sie über Kanäle erreichte. Im Jahr 2002 westwärts an die deutsche Ostseeküste gelangt. Kürzlich in unteren Flussabschnitten im Danziger Golf (Polen) erfasst. Bewegt sich auch in Flüssen seiner ursprünglichen Verbreitungsgebiete nach oben; in der Wolga stromaufwärts nach Moskau und nördlich zum Rybinskoye-See; Im Dniepr bis nach Belarus, gelangte über die Donau im Jahr 2000 nach Österreich. Zufällig 1991 in Nordamerika und am untersten Rhein (Niederlande) 2004 durch Ballastwasser von Schiffen eingeschleppt.

Gefahren für diese Art: Keine Gefahren bekannt, im Gegenteil handelt es sich um eine
Ivasive Art: Status und Invasivität der Art (nach Wiesner et al., 2010): Die Art kommt mittlerweile in allen Donau-Anrainerstaaten vor und muss darüber hinaus als etabliert angesehen werden. Polen weist die Art als „invasiv“ aus, DAISIE listet sie unter den „100 of the worst“ (www.europe-aliens.org). Nach Einstufung in den Schwarzen Listen für Deutschland und für Österreich gilt die Art in beiden Ländern als „invasiv“ (Nehring et al. 2010).
