Etymologie
Benannt nach Karl Fedorovich Kessler.
Verbreitung
Europa und Asien: Donaudelta (Braila, Lake Brates); Seen Kagul, Yalpukh, Katlabukh, Kitai. Vom Dniester aus dem Liman in die Region Kamentes-Podol'sk. Vom Dnepr nach Dnepropetrowsk; Odessa und alle Küsten des Kaspischen Meeres; und Wolga in Astrachan. Abwesend aus dem Asowschen Meer. Patzner et al (2011) berichten, dass diese Art das Nordseebecken durch den Rhein-Mai-Donau-Kanal erreichte (was gut dokumentiert ist). Innerhalb von 4 Jahren besiedelte die Art alle geeigneten Flusshabitate unterhalb des Invasionsgebiets.

Invasive Art!! Status und Invasivität der Art (nach Wiesner et al. 2010) Die Art kommt mittlerweile in allen Donau-Anrainerstaaten, von Österreich bis zum Delta – vermutlich etabliert – vor. Es werden Funde in den Niederlanden (Waal, Rhein, Nieuwe Merwede, Hollands Diep) gemeldet (Van Kessel et al. 2009). Im österreichischen „Aktionsplan Neobiota“ wurde die Art als „potenziell invasiv“ bewertet (Essl & Rabitsch 2004). Nach Einstufung in den Schwarzen Listen für Deutschland und für Österreich gilt die Art in beiden Ländern als „potenziell invasiv“ (Nehring et al. 2010).
