Etymologie
Von hemi- (= halb), Andeutung nicht offensichtlich, vielleicht bezogen auf kleinere Zähne und / oder Maul im Vergleich zu Brycon (obwohl als Untergattung von Tetragonopterus vorgeschlagen); Brycon, verallgemeinerter Begriff, der in den Gattungsnamen vieler Salmler verwendet wird. Er stammt von bryco (= beißen, Zähne zu knirschen oder gierig fressen), ursprünglich eine Anspielung auf vollständig bezahnten Oberkiefer. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
