Typusfundort: Rio Moju, Südufer des Amazonas in der Nähe von Santarém, ca. 2°25'S, 54°10'W (Karte), Amazonasbecken, Pará, Brasilien.
Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Christopher W. Coates (1899-1974), Kurator (späterer Direktor) des New Yorker Aquariums und Studierender an elektrischen Fischen, der die Typusexemplare zur Verfügung stellte (Anmerkung: Coates war auch der Erste, der Glühbirnen mit in Gefangenschaft gehaltenen elektrischen Aalen betrieb, heute eine Grundausstattung in öffentlichen Aquarien weltweit).
