Typusfundort: Indonesien, West Nusa Tenggara, Sumbawa, Teluk Saleh, Kuppelriff, -8,551°, 118,067° (Karte), Riffkamm, 2-6 m.
Etymologie
Das spezifische Epitheton stammt vom lateinischen Adjektiv maculosa (= gefleckt) und bezieht sich auf die markanten großen schwarzen Flecken auf der ersten Rückenflosse der Männchen.
Verbreitung
Die Typenreihen wurden absichtlich auf jene Exemplare aus Teluk Saleh, Sumbawa, Indonesien, beschränkt worden, aber aus ganz Ost-Indonesien (z. B. Abb. 8 in der Erstbeschreibung, ein Exemplar aus aus Raja Ampat) und östlich bis nach Pohnpei und Australien, sind Individuen mit ähnlichem Aussehen bekannt. DNA-Sequenzen von Exemplaren aus West-Papua (Fakfak), Sulawesi und Pohnpei bestätigen ihre Übereinstimmung mit denen der Typuslokalität von E. maculosa; die letzten beiden dieser Exemplare wurden in Tornabene et al. als Eviota punctulata geführt. (2013, 2015).
