Etymologie
Von punctata (= gepunktet), was auf einen diffusen schwarzen Fleck auf dem Schwanzstiel hinweist.
Verbreitung
Pethia punctata ist in den Western Ghats von Indien endemisch. Sie scheint auf die westlich fließenden Flüsse beschränkt zu sein. Sie kommt in Wyanad und Ernakulam, in den Naturschutzgebieten von Kerala und Indira Gandhi vor, sowie in den in den Westen fließenden Flüssen im Bezirk Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Da die Art in Wayanad vorkommt, ist es möglich, dass sie auch in die westlich fließenden Flüssen Netravathi und Kumaradhara von Karnataka lebt. Ein Bericht dieser Art aus Sri Lanka bedarf der Bestätigung. Außerdem könnten Meldungen über diese Art aus den Mula-Mutha-Flüssen von Pune fehlerhaft sein.

Status: Stand 7.11.2019:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Für Pethia punctata wurden keine besonderen Bedrohungen festgestellt. Das Gebiet, in dem die Art vorkommt, ist jedoch von Verstädterung, Tourismus, invasiven Fischarten und landwirtschaftlicher Verschmutzung betroffen.
