Etymologie
Von assimilis (= ähnlich), d. h. "sehr eng verwandt" mit Dawkinsia filamentosa. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Südliche Western Ghats, Südindien.

Status: Stand 6.11.2019:VU Vulnerable (gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Artspezifische Bedrohungen für D. assimils sind nicht bekannt. Die Lebensräume dieser Barbe im Bhavani-Fluss in der Nähe von Mettupalayam und im Chalakudy-Fluss in der Nähe von Vettilapara sind jedoch durch Verschmutzung aus häuslichen und landwirtschaftlichen Quellen bedroht. Durch das geplante Wasserkraftprojekt in Athirapally besteht auch eine plausible Gefahr für die Lebensräume in Vettilapara. Aufgrund seiner eingeschränkten Verbreitung kann eine unbewirtschaftete Sammlung für den Handel mit Aquarienfischen auch eine Bedrohung für die lokale Population von D. assimilis darstellen.
