Typusfundort: An einem Strand der Insel Lord Howe im südwestlichen Pazifik.
Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von R. E. Baxter, einem Amateur-Naturforscher auf der Lord Howe Insel, Australien; er schickte „viele Raritäten“ von der Insel an das Australian Museum, darunter Exemplare dieser Art, die er nach einem Sturm an einem Strand gestrandet fand. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Atlantik und Pazifik, antiäquatorial: Japan östlich bis Baja California (Mexiko), südlich bis Hawaii-Inseln; New South Wales (Australien) und Lord Howe Insel bis Südchile. Nach Viji et al. (2021) sind berichte von dieser Art aus dem Indischen Ozean wahrscheinlich auf Fehlidentifikationen von Cubiceps whiteleggii zurück zu führen.
