Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Waites Kollegen, dem Naturforscher Thomas Whitelegge (1850-1927), der mehrere an den Strand gespülte (und noch lebende) Exemplare „bekam“. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-West-Pazifik: Ostafrika, Südafrika und Maskarenen östlich bis zu den Philippinen und Neuirland (Papua-Neuguinea), nördlich bis Japan, südlich bis Australien.
