Etymologie
Nach einem altgriechischen Werk, das an einen Speer, einen spitzen Pflock oder einen Bug eines Schiffes erinnert, das früher für schlanke, spitzköpfige Fische verwendet wurde, einschließlich (nach Aristoteles) Barrakudas (Name bedeutet nicht "Hammerfisch", wie an anderer Stelle oft berichtet) [erschien ohne Spezies, also nicht mit Esox sphyraena tautonym; Autorenschaft wird manchmal Röse zugeschrieben, der Artedis vorlinnäische Veröffentlichung von 1738 nachdruckte.] (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
