Etymologie
Ruberrimus (= sehr rot), bezieht sich auf die "rote, fast einfarbige" Färbung (der Erwachsenen; Jungtiere haben zwei weiße Seitenstreifen). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Nordöstlicher Pazifik: Aleuten (USA) südlich bis zur Pazifikküste der nördlichen Baja California (Mexiko).
