Etymologie

Hypo- (= unten); orthos (= gerade); odon (= Zahn), Anspielung nicht erklärt, bezieht sich vielleicht auf den "vertikalen und ziemlich stark gezähnten" aufsteigenden (d.h. unteren) Rand des Präoperculums von Hyporthodus flavicauda (= Hyporthodus niveatus). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
