TypusartLucifer albipennis Döderlein, 1882. Typus ist ein Ersatzname. Lucifer Döderlein, 1882, war schon früher verwendet worden als Lucifer Thompson, 1830 bei Krebstieren (Crustacea) und als Lucifer Reichenbach, 1849 bei Vögeln (Aves).

Etymologie
Photos (= Licht), bezieht sich wahrscheinlich auf das suborbitale phosphoreszierende Organ und zwei Reihen von leuchtenden Punkten entlang des unteren Teils der Seiten, mit zahlreichen rudimentären ähnlichen Organen über die Körperhaut verstreut; nectes (= Schwimmer).
