Etymologie
Bezieht sich auf 12 schmale braune oder schwarze zebraartige Streifen auf dem Körper. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Japan südwärts bis zu den Philippinen, Borneo, Indonesien und Nordaustralien.

Status: Stand 18.07.2023:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Der Zebra-Stierkopfhai wird als Beifang hauptsächlich in der Schleppnetz-, möglicherweise auch in der Kiemennetz- und Langleinenfischerei gefangen, hat aber keinen kommerziellen Wert und wird wahrscheinlich zurückgeworfen. Ausgehend von anderen Heterodontus-Arten wird vermutet, dass die Sterblichkeit in Kiemennetzen an Bord des Schiffes mit ~0-3 % gering ist und auch die Sterblichkeit nach dem Aussetzen ist vermutlich gering. Es liegen keine Informationen über Fänge vor, außer für Borneo, wo er als selten gefangen gemeldet wird; zum Beispiel wurden bei 274 untersuchten Anlandungen in Kota Kinabulu von August 2015 bis Juli 2016 nur 8 Individuen beobachtet.
Der Fischereidruck ist in den meisten Teilen seines Verbreitungsgebiets hoch, wobei die Küstenfischerei in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, den Philippinen und Indonesien übermäßig oder vollständig ausgebeutet wird. Die wahrscheinliche Nachtaktivität des Stierkopfhais bietet Schutz vor dem fischereilichen Druck während des Tages und die Überlebensrate nach dem Zurücksetzen ist vermutlich hoch. Zu den indirekten und subletalen Ursachen der Mortalität gehören die Zerstörung und Verschlechterung von Lebensräumen. In Vietnam haben Dynamit- und Zyanidfischerei sowie Sedimentation zu einer weitreichenden Zerstörung der Riffe geführt.
