Etymologie
Kerkos (= Schwanz), bezieht sich auf einen verlängerten Schwanz, der aus einer einzigartigen Wirbelzahl mit einem Bauchwirbel weniger und einem Schwanzwirbel mehr als bei anderen Kardinalfischen resultiert; Amia, ein nicht-binominaler Name, der von Gronow (1763) auf Apogon angewendet wurde, heute ein häufig verwendetes Namensanhängsel in der Familie.
