Typusfundort: Unter Pucayacu nicht weit von seiner Mündung in den Bobonaza, Amazonas System, Kolumbien.
Etymologie
Von melanos (= schwarz); pterus (= Flosse), bezogen auf seine überwiegend schwarzen Flossen. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Oberer Amazonas und Orinoco Flussbecken: Bolivien, Ecuador, Peru und Venezuela.
