Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren des Arztes und Ichthyologen William Orville Ayres (1817-1887), Gründungsmitglied der Kalifornischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der diese Art 1855 beschrieb, aber einen vorbelegten Namen (Petromyzon plumbeus) verwendete, weshalb er ersetzt werden musste. Östlicher Pazifik: südöstliches Alaska (U.S.A.) südlich bis nördliches Kalifornien (U.S.A.).

Gefahren für diese Art: Spezifische Bedrohungen und ihre Auswirkungen sind nicht definiert. Zu den potenziellen Bedrohungen gehören die Veränderung und Verschlechterung des Lebensraums durch Dämme, Umleitungen, Verschmutzung, Kanalisierung/Baggerarbeiten, Urbanisierung und andere Faktoren. Renaud (1997) stellte fest, dass die Hauptursache für den Rückgang der Neunaugenarten in der nördlichen Hemisphäre die Verschlechterung des Lebensraums durch Verschmutzung und Flussregulierung (Dämme) ist. Die Regulierung der Flüsse hat einige Lebensräume verändert und den Zugang zu den Laichgründen verhindert.
