Etymologie

Verbreitung
Das Hauptverbreitungsgebiet dieser Art ist heute das Mittelmeer. Sie ist häufig im gesamten westlichen Mittelmeer, dort entlang der spanischen, italienischen, marokkanischen und algerischen Küsten, der Nordküste von Tunesien und um Korsika, Sardinien und Sizilien. Auch häufig in der Adria und der nördlichen Ägäis. Seltener im südlichen Teil der Ägäis und an der Südküste der Türkei. Auch an den östlichen Küsten des östlichen Mittelmeeres bis hin zum Nil-Delta. Fehlt wahrscheinlich an den Küsten von Libyen und Ägypten westlich des Nildeltas. Erwähnt wird diese Art auch aus dem Atlantischen Ozean in der Straße von Gibraltar. Sie kommt auch an der marokkanischen Atlantikküste vor.

Status: Stand 27.09.2017: LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Trisopterus capelanus ist eine kommerziell wichtige Spezies, die in Teilen ihres Verbreitungsgebietes gezielt und in anderen als Beifang von Seehecht und Roter Seebarbe mitgefangen wird.
