Etymologie
Anspielung nicht erklärt, vermutlich in Bezug auf den Gila River in Arizona und das westliche New Mexico (USA), aber Baird & Girard sagten, dass die drei Taxa, die sie in die Gattung aufgenommen hatten, alle aus dem Zuni River in New Mexico stammten. Vielleicht glaubten die Autoren, dass der Zuni Teil des nahe gelegenen, aber getrennten Gila-Beckens war, oder wählten Gila (angeblich abgeleitet von einer spanischen Zusammenziehung von Hah-quah-sa-aal, einem Yuma-indianischen Wort, das „fließendes Wasser, das salzig ist“ bedeutet) als etwas das nicht mehr ist, als ein lokal angehauchter Name aus dem amerikanischen Südwesten.
