Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Joseph Cheesman Thompson (1874-1943), US-Navy-Medizinoffizier (Neurochirurg), Amateur-Zoologe und -Archäologe, Mitbegründer der Zoologischen Gesellschaft von San Diego, Psychoanalytiker und Züchter burmesischer Katzen, der auch das Typusexemplar sammelte. Verbreitung
Weit verbreitet im Indopazifik, bekannt von Madagaskar, der Westküste von Thailand, Vietnam, den Philippinen, Indonesien (Flores-See), Hongkong, Taiwan, Japan und den Fidschi-Inseln. Es ist eine Flachwasserart, die in felsigen Gezeitenbecken oder flachen sandigen und schlammigen Böden in der Regel <100 m gefunden wird.
