Typusfundort: Suratta, Distrikt Surat, Indien, Mündung des Flusses Tapti in den Golf von Khambhat, Arabisches Meer, Westlicher Indischer Ozean.
Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Christoph Samuel John (1747-1813), einem deutschen Missionar in der dänischen Kolonie Tranquebar (heute Tharangambadi) in Indien, der naturkundliche Exemplare für Bloch sammelte, darunter Typusexemplare dieses Schnappers. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Indo-Westpazifik: Ostafrika, Persischer Golf, Mosambik-Kanal, Seychellen, Madagaskar und Maskarenen (Mauritius und Rodrigues), östlich bis zu den Philippinen und Fidschi, nördlich bis zu den Ryukyu-Inseln, südlich bis zu den Kimberley (Nordaustralien) und Queensland (Australien) und Neukaledonien.

Status: Stand 1.9.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Diese Art wird hauptsächlich mit Handleinen, Grundlangleinen, Fallen und Grundschleppnetzen gefangen. In Hongkong wird diese Art auf Märkten für lebenden Fisch angeboten, in Pakistan, Singapur, Malaysia, Thailand und auf den Philippinen wird sie für die kommerzielle Aquakultur genutzt.
