Etymologie
Patronym nicht identifiziert, wahrscheinlich zu Ehren von Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), deutscher Arzt und Reisender, der viele der in der Reihe der Fauna Japonica-Monographien (1833-1850) beschriebenen Fische sammelte. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Südöstlicher Atlantik: Vema Seamount; Rotes Meer; Indo-West-Pazifik: Ostkap und KwaZulu-Natal (Südafrika), Ostafrika, Persischer Golf, Madagaskar und Maskarenen (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) östlich bis zu den Hawaii-Inseln (USA) und den Gesellschaftsinseln (Französisch-Polynesien), nördlich bis zum südlichen Japanischen Meer, südlich bis zur Arafura-See vor dem Northern Territory (Australien), Neukaledonien und Tonga.

Gefahren für diese Art: Diese kommerziell wichtige Art wird hauptsächlich mit Grundlangleinen und tiefen Handleinen gefangen. Die Anlandungen in Japan und Hawaii liegen zwischen 10.000 und 50.000 Tonnen (FishStatJ 2015). In einigen Gebieten, wie z. B. in Japan, gilt er als gängiger Speisefisch und ist eine der wichtigsten Arten in der hawaiianischen Offshore-Handleinenfischerei.
