Typusfundort: vor dem pazifischen Panama, östlicher Pazifik, 5°30'N, 86°45'W (Karte), Albatross Station 3366.
Etymologie
Atri- (= schwarz); pectus (= Brust), bezogen auf schwarze Brust (wie auch Schnauze, unterer Teil des Kopfes, Wangen, Bauch und Auskleidungen von Maul und Körperhöhle). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Ostpazifik vor den Küsten Amerikas von 32°N bis mindestens 4°S. Wurde meist zwischen 1800 und 4000 m gefangen, selten bis 1200 m am Unterlauf oder am Fuß der Kontinentalabhänge. Es scheint keinen Zusammenhang zwischen Fischgröße und Vorkommenstiefe zu geben. Porogadus atripectus scheint sich nicht mehr als etwa 500 km vom Abhang zu entfernen.
