Etymologie
Vom altgriechischen osmeres (= duftend), in Anlehnung an den gurkenähnlichen Geruch [Anmerkung: der umgangssprachliche Begriff "Smelt" bezieht sich nicht auf diesen merkwürdigen Geruch, sondern leitet sich möglicherweise vom altniederländischen "Smalt" ab, was Fett oder geschmolzene Butter bedeutet und sich darauf bezieht, dass das ölige Fleisch des Fisches ihm eine zartschmelzende Konsistenz verleiht]. Das Suffix kommt vom lateinischen forma (= Form, Gestalt oder Aussehen).
