Etymologie
Von om- (= Schulter) (d. h. Bereich über der Brustflosse); branchos (= Kieme), bezieht sich auf eine eingeschränkte Kiemenöffnung, die sich ventral niemals weit unter die ventrale Ebene der Brustflossenbasis erstreckt, wurde bei Omobranchus anolius als „sehr kleines Loch über der Brust“ beschrieben.
