Etymologie
Latinisierung von gyrinos (= Kaulquappe), mit Bezug auf die kaulquappenartige Form. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Nordamerika: Einzugsgebiete des Atlantiks und der Golfküste von New Hampshire bis zum Nueces River in Texas, USA; Einzugsgebiete des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms, der Hudson Bay (Red River) und des Mississippi von Quebec bis Saskatchewan in Kanada und südlich des Golfs von Mexiko in den USA.

Status: Stand 15.8.2022:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Es kann lokale Bedrohungen geben, aber für das gesamte Verbreitungsgebiet sind keine größeren Bedrohungen bekannt.
