Typusfundort: Südwestlich von Weipa, Golf von Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia, 12°53.96'S, 141°12.71'E (Karte), 36-38 m Tiefe.
Etymologie
Das Epithet grenzt die australische Verbreitung dieses Mitglieds des Blauflecken-Maskenrochen-Komplexes der Gattung Neotrygon ab.
Verbreitung
Die Typuslokalität von N. australiae ist südwestlich von Weipa, Golf von Carpentaria. Bekannte Verbreitungung: Timor Island, Rote Island, Kleine Sunda Inseln, darunter Lombok und Flores, Sahul Regal, vom Ningaloo Reef bis zur Torres Strait und dem nördlichen Ende des Great Barrier Reef. Last und Co-Autoren schrieben, dass die Verbreitung von N. australiae auch Ost-Indonesien, West-Papua und Neuguinea umfaßt, das ist nach der Auffassung anderer Autoren ungerechtfertigt. Demnach untersuchten Last und Co-Autoren keine Blauflecken Maskenrochen aus diesen Regionen und bisherige Untersuchungen zeigen, dass die Proben von Blauflecken Maskenrochen von Ambon und den Kei-Inseln in den Molukken und von der Biak-Insel in West-Papua deutlich unterschiedlichen mitochondrialen Clades entsprachen, die sich von dem Cladus, der N. australiae charakterisiert unterscheiden.
