Etymologie
Benannt nach Amerika, ursprünglich von einer Abbildung und einem kurzen Bericht des Naturforschers Mark Catesby (1743) über ein Exemplar aus den Carolinas von Amerika bekannt. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Atlantik: Ostküste der USA und im Golf von Mexiko; Exemplare von der südamerikanischen Küste gehören der re-validierten Art Menticirrhus martinicensis an.
