Etymologie
Die Art heißt sahulensis und bezieht sich auf den Kontinent Sahul aus dem Pleistozän, der die Landmassen Australiens und Neuguineas umfasste, die bei niedrigem Meeresspiegel verbunden sind und spiegelt sich in der modernen Verbreitung der Art wider. Es ist auch eine Hommage an die Australian and New Guinea Fishes Association (die die Zeitschrift Fishes of Sahul betreibt), die viel zur Förderung und Dokumentation einheimischer Fische der Region, insbesondere der Regenbogenfische, beigetragen hat.
Verbreitung
M. sahulensis ist auf der nordöstlichen Kap-York-Halbinsel in Australien heimisch und im Süden von Zentral-Neuguinea. Zu den Fundorten gehören die Nordspitze und die Ostküste von Cape York, vom Jardine River über Bamaga und Shelburne Bay bis hin zu Scrubby Creek. Torres-Straße (Moa-Insel); Papua-Neuguinea vom Pahoturi bis zum Bensbach-Flusssystem, einschließlich des Mid-Fly und Indonesien aus der Region Merauke. Diese lückenhafte Verbreitung umfasst ein breites Verbreitungsgebiet mit regionalen Lebensraumunterschieden, es umfasst größere seitliche Auensysteme und kleine sumpfige Bäche einschließlich Dünenseen mit dichter Bedeckung. Der Lebensraum in Cape York besteht im Allgemeinen aus kleinen Bächen und Pandanus-Sümpfen im Land der Sandböden. Während der Nicht-Überschwemmungsperioden ist das Wasser in der Regel klar und reichlich bedeckt, entweder in Form von Holzabfällen oder in Form von Wasserpflanzen. Die Art kommt auch in Lilienlagunen vor und kommt am häufigsten in sauren Gewässern vor (pH 5,5–7,0).
