Typusfundort: Südlich von Sri Lanka, 5°21'N, 80°38'E (Karte), ca. 2250 m Tiefe.
Etymologie
Poly (= viele); lepis (= Schuppen), bezieht sich auf relativ viele horizontale und schräge Schuppenreihen. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Zirkumglobal in tropischen und subtropischen Meeren; Atlantik zwischen Äquator und 20°N, Indischer Ozean zwischen 15°N und 15°S, Pazifik zwischen 34°N und 31°S ostwärts bis etwa 109°W; nördlicher Zentralpazifik: Hawaii-Inseln.

Gefahren für diese Art: Keine Gefahren bekannt, möglicherweise wird die Art bei Tiefwasserfängen mit erbeutet.
