Etymologie
Grandis (= groß); squamus (= Schuppe), bezieht sich auf die größeren Schuppen, 26 oder 28 entlang der Seitenlinie, im Vergleich zu 45 bei Mugil cryptocheilos (= Chelon auratus) und Mugil plumieri (= Mugil cephalus), seinen mutmaßlichen Verwandten zu jener Zeit. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Östlicher Atlantik: Westafrikanische Küste, von Mauretanien über die Mündung des Senegalflusses bis zum Kongo, sowie an den Inseln Bioko (Fernando Poo) und Sao Tome.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 12.3.2022: DD Data Deficient (ungenügende Datengrundlage)
Gefahren für diese Art: Parachelon grandisquamis wird in der Subsistenzfischerei kommerziell genutzt. Einige Meeräschen werden in Aquakulturen an der ostafrikanischen Küste genutzt, aber es ist nicht bekannt, ob P. grandisquamis dabei eine Rolle spielt oder nicht. Es sind weitere Untersuchungen erforderlich, um festzustellen, ob die Subsistenzfischerei eine Bedrohung für P. grandisquamis darstellt.
