Etymologie
Leo, Etymologie nicht erklärt oder ersichtlich, aber hier eine Vermutung: benannt nach dem Ichthyologen Lev (oder Leo) Semyonovich Berg (1876-1950), der mehrere Arbeiten über Baikalsee-Groppen schrieb, die Taliev zitierte, und der mehr als ein Dutzend Groppen-Taxa beschrieb; Cottus (= Typusgattung der Familie) [Taliev benannte keinen Typus, daher wird die Autorenschaft G. Palmer, British Museum (Natural History), ein Kompilator für den Zoological Record, der die Gattung bezeichnete [nicht zu verwechseln mit Leiocottus].
