Herpetichthyes

Huxley, 1880

Huxley prägte im Jahr 1880 den Namen Herpetichthyes um das sub-tetrapode evolutionäre Stadium zu beschreiben, das durch Ceratodus vertreten ist.

Smith Woodward (1931), schlug die Ausdehnung des Begriffs vor, um (entgegen Huxley) die Crossopterygier mit einzuschließen.

Diese Bezeichnung ist gegenwärtig nicht mehr in Gebrauch.
