Etymologie
Melanos (= schwarz); otis (= Ohr), bezieht sich auf den tiefschwarzen Fleck auf dem Kiemendeckel. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Östlicher Zentralpazifik: Pazifikküste von Zentral-Baja California (Mexiko) südlich bis Kolumbien, einschließlich Golf von Kalifornien (Mexiko).
