Typusfundort: Rio Dourados bei Linha Várzea, auf der Straße von Severiano de Almeida nach Aratiba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasilien, ca. 27°23'S, 52°13'W (Karte).
Etymologie
Vom griechischen lipos (= Fett) und kara (= Kopf), in Anspielung auf den extrem großen Fettbuckel erwachsener Männchen.
Verbreitung
Gymnogeophagus lipokarenos ist aus dem oberen Teil des Einzugsgebietes des Rio Uruguay bekannt.
