Etymologie
Cinereus (= lat. für "aschfarben" oder "grau"), basierend auf einem Gemälde von Catesby (1734), der den Fisch Turdus cinereus peltatus nannte, von dem Walbaum sagte, er sei „grau mit eingestreuten rötlichen Tönen“; Catesbys Abbildung passt jedoch zu keiner Gerreidenart im westlichen Atlantik. Westlicher Atlantik: Bermudas und Florida, USA; Bahamas, nördlicher Golf von Mexiko, rund um die Karibik, einschließlich der Antillen und der südamerikanischen Küste bis Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien.
