Etymologie
Der Name pelotapes ist die alte Bezeichnung für die Stadt Pelotas, vom spanischen pelota (= Ball), in Bezug auf ein kleines Boot aus Kuhfell und Bändern, was sich auf den einheimischen Stamm bezog, der das Gebiet in der Vergangenheit bewohnte, das von der Spezies bewohnt wird.
Verbreitung
Austrolebias pelotapes ist aus temporären Tümpeln und Sümpfen bekannt, die mit kleinen Bach-Nebenflüssen an den nördlichen Rand des Canal de São Gonçalo, im Patos-Mirim Lagunen-System, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasilien verbunden sind. In der Typuslokalität zeigten Wasserproben die Parameter: pH 6,4 - 6,8, gelöster Sauerstoff 5,7 - 8,7 mg / l und Wassertemperatur 16,7 - 25,9 °C. Intensive Feldstudien in den letzten 10 Jahren haben gezeigt, dass sich alle Populationen dieser Art innerhalb oder neben städtischen Gebieten der Stadt Pelotas befinden, in aquatischen Lebensräumen, die drastisch reduziert werden und die Art deshalb stark vom Aussterben bedroht ist. Angesichts des geringen Vorkommens und des starken Niedergangs der Habitate sollten A. pelotapes als vom Aussterben bedrohte Arten betrachtet werden.
