Typusfundort: Brasilien, Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Gemeinde Bom Jesus, rio Santana, ein Zufluss des oberen rio Taquari-Antas-Einzugsgebietes, oberes rio Jacuí-Becken, Laguna dos Patos-System, 28°37’00"S, 50°26’42"W (Karte).
Etymologie
Der spezifische Name nubium bezieht sich auf das lateinische Wort nubis, Wolke. Das spezifische Epitheton spielt auf die Tatsache an, dass diese Art für ein Mitglied der Gattung Austrolebias bisher am höchsten Fundort nachgewiesen wurde. Darüber hinaus sind einjährige Fische im Volksmund als peixes das nuvens, Wolkenfische, bekannt, weil sie nach Regenfällen in Gebieten erscheinen, die zuvor vollständig trocken waren.
Verbreitung
Die Art ist nur aus temporären Tünpeln in der Gemeinde Bom Jesus bekannt, die sich im Hochland des rio Santana befinden, oberes Rio Taquari-Antas-Einzugagebiet, oberes Rio Jacuí-Becken, in Höhen von etwa 1000 Meter ü.M.S., Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Südbrasilien.
