Typusfundort: 6°02'00"N, 120°44'40"E (Karte), vor der Insel Jolo, Philippinen, Albatross Station 5550, Tiefe 263 [258] Faden.

Brachys (= kurz); oura (= Schwanz), bezogen auf kürzere Schwanzflosse im Vergleich zu Etmopterus lucifer.

Westpazifik: Japan bis Philippinen, nicht auf der südlichen Hemisphäre.
