Etymologie

Calceus (= lat. für Schuh), von der portugiesischen Bezeichnung sapata für diesen und andere squaliforme Haie, z. B. Centroselachus crepidater, Somniosidae; auch bekannt als sapata branca (= weißer Schuh), Anspielung nicht erklärt, vielleicht darauf bezogen, dass sein grau-weißer Körper mit einer langen Schnauze einem Samtschuh ähnelt.
