Etymologie
Vom Altgriechischen clupia, ein Name mit unklarem Ursprung für eine ungewisse Anzahl von Fischarten, der von antiken Autoren wie Plutarch verwendet wurde oder von clupea als lateinische Bezeichnung für einen heringsähnlichen Fisch, vielleicht abgeleitet von Clypea oder Clupea, einer nordafrikanischen Küstenstadt (2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.), deren Name von Naturforschern der Renaissance (z. B. Rondelet und Salviani) mit einem Fisch (wahrscheinlich einem Neunauge) verwechselt wurde, aber auch von Giovio (1524) zusammen mit "alosa" für die heute als Alosa alosa (Alosidae) bekannte Art verwendet wurde; Dds Suffix leitet sich vom lateinischen forma ab, was Form, Gestalt oder Aussehen bedeutet.
