Etymologie
Elongatus (= langgestreckt), mit Bezug auf einen "länglichen" Kopf und/oder einen "langen, schlanken, besonders langgestreckten" Körper zwischen Schwanz- und Rückenflosse. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Gefahren für diese Art: Der Lebensraum fällt häufig mit einer intensiven menschlichen Nutzung zusammen. Zu den Bedrohungen gehört der Verlust geeigneter Lebensräume durch Landwirtschaft, Kohleabbau und Wohnbebauung. Dieser Fisch reagiert empfindlich auf Verschlammung, Verschmutzung und Trübung. In Pennsylvania geht der Bestand offenbar aufgrund des Verlusts sauberer Bäche mit Tümpeln und Riffs zurück. Der Rückgang zwischen 1925 und 1950 in Ohio wurde auf die Wasserverschmutzung durch Kohlebergbau, Landwirtschaft, Industrie und häusliche Abwässer zurückgeführt. In einigen Gebieten wird diese Art als Fischköder gefangen. Obwohl es in Kanada keine unmittelbare Bedrohung gibt, könnte die langfristige Verschlechterung des Lebensraums den Fortbestand dieser Art im südlichen Ontario gefährden.
