Etymologie
Aphya (= ein kleiner sardinenartiger Fisch), bezieht sich auf die geringe Größe von Aphyocharax pusillus; Charax (= typische Gattung der Characiformes), aus dem Griechischen mit der Bedeutung "Palisade aus spitzen Stöcken", die sich auf die dicht gepackten scharfen Zähne bezieht, heute eine gängige Wurzel-Namen-Bildung in der Ordnung.
