Etymologie
Amami, benannt nach der Typuslokalität der einizigen bisher bekannten Art der Gattung, Amamiichthys matsubarai, die nur von der Insel Amami-oshima, Ryukyu-Inseln, Japan bekannt ist; ichthys (= Fisch).
